HAIR CHECK: Using Technology To Determine Hair Health

Aside from the telltale signs like split ends and dry and brittle strands, and DIY hair checks you may do at home such as tug and knot tests, determining the true health of your hair and scalp may call for something more complex.

Nowadays, with the advent of scientific and technological advancements, equipment and diagnostic tests for examining the hair and scalp up close are available in dermatological clinics. These allow for a closer inspection of the hair and scalp to detect problems that are not visible to the naked eye such as pore obstruction, overactive secretion of sebum, dandruff, dry and/or flaky scalp, inflammation, and other issues.

The folliscope is an automated handheld apparatus with a microscopic camera that connects to a computer via USB. It shows a clear and high definition image of the scalp and hair and saves the captured real-time digital images, which may be used as reference for further testing.

Hair and Scalp Analyzer SystemsHair & Scalp AnalyzerThese are complete computerized software and equipment that performs a series of thorough visual and direct analysis on the hair and scalp. It also measures hair density, hair shaft diameter, hair growth, sebum rate and meter, among others. Usually, these diagnostic tests also include dietary and lifestyle investigations to gauge what other factors may be contributing to hair loss or poor hair health and determine the appropriate and necessary treatment.

The Newcomer to Your Routine

When it comes to looking good and maintaining our figure, we all have our routines: eat healthily, exercise regularly, cleanse, tone and moisturize. When it comes to hair care however, our commitment to routine varies.

Some of us prefer hair we can wash and wear. Others like to spend more time working their mane: blow drying, curling or straightening, gelling or waxing it into style. Others, still, have extra special requirements: a trip to the hair spa every now and then, a preferred stylist for trimming or drastic makeovers. Hair, indeed, is the one arena in which we can all agree to disagree.

But one thing’s for certain: we all want healthy, or at least healthy-looking, scalp and hair.

Now, apart from shampooing and conditioning, how does one achieve that, given the spectrum of dedication to hair out there? More importantly, is this even achievable for those who don’t feel like exerting too much effort on their mane?

The answer is yes, and it’s simple. One only needs to incorporate another player to their routine for leveled up maintenance: Novuhair Topical Scalp Lotion.

danjune201502Though primarily known as nature’s own remedy to hair loss, Novuhair Topical Scalp Lotion also works excellently as a hair care agent. This means using it to help prevent hair loss, as well as taking advantage of its side effects. Novuhair also helps hydrate the scalp, maintain the hair’s natural luster and prevent early hair graying and whitening.

Made of herbal ingredients that include moringa oleifera, panax ginseng, virgin coconut oil and the natural essences of rosemary and peppermint, Novuhair nourishes the scalp and hair by increasing the flow of nutrients and improving blood circulation to the scalp. This, in effect, helps solve hair loss and grow back hair. At the same time, it strengthens the scalp against premature hair loss.

Using Novuhair is quick and simple for everyone. Those who want a quick and instant solution simply need to squeeze out the lotion onto their scalp and take a few minutes to massage. Do this after rinsing out the shampoo, while bathing.

Those who don’t mind spending extra time on their crowning glory may also use it as a leave-on styling agent throughout the day. Again, simply massage on enough lotion to cover the entire scalp, and then style your hair accordingly.

It’s an easy single step to slide into your already established routine, and one that can be effortlessly applied by wash-and-wearers and high-maintainers alike.

Novuhair is available at all Mercury Drug and leading drugstores nationwide. Call 413-6570 or 0922-883-0575 and visit for more details.

Myth or Fact:Diet is related to hair loss

Fact. It’s important to eat right in order to be generally healthy. Nevertheless, no food has been proven to be beneficial or detrimental to hair.

Inheriting hair loss — and its solution

When considering the causes of an ailment, one of the first places to look is our genes. Could it possibly be something you’ve inherited?

With hair loss, this is certainly the case. In fact, it is the most common cause of hair loss, called Androgenetic Alopecia. It occurs in about 95 percent of males and 70 percent in females. Studies reveal that this also occurs in combination with other factors such as aging and hormonal changes.

Symptoms of hereditary hair loss include a gradual thinning of the hair to complete hair loss on a certain part of the scalp, if not entire baldness. The hair loss pattern and rate is different among men and women, though they similarly occur in the 20s and 30s. Family history is the biggest indicator of when hereditary hair loss starts to take place, and at what rate.

The good news is that hereditary hair loss is treatable. And while invasive options such as hair lasers and transplants abound, nature itself has bestowed us with the remedy we need to deal with hair loss.

Novuhair Topical Scalp Lotion is an all-natural formula for treating hair loss. It is made of herbal ingredients such as moringa oleifera, panax ginseng, aloe vera, the essential oils of rosemary and peppermint, and virgin coconut oil. Collectively, the ingredients help improve blood circulation to the scalp and increase nutrients to hair follicles. Other beneficial side effects include returning and locking the hair’s natural luster, and preventing premature graying or whitening.

Just as hair loss can be inherited from your family, so can you inherit the solution — from nature.

Wouldn’t it be great if we can step out every single day with salon-gorgeous hair? Unless you’re an A-lister celebrity with a team of hairstylists at your beck and call or a fashion model getting ready for that picture-perfect shoot, we all have to deal with our own hair issues. Thus, there are good hair days and bad hair days.

Say goodbye to bad hair days by changing the way you deal and feel about your hair problems. Sometimes, all it takes is one little thing to turn things around and feel more confident about your locks. Read on for a few tips.

Get a flattering haircut. Book an appointment with your stylist or if you have none yet, ask friends for a referral. Discuss with your hair stylist the best cut and color that flatters your face shape and suits your taste. Nothing says confident better than a woman who obviously rocks her ‘do.

MYTH OR FACT:The use of steroids have no side effects on the hair

MYTH. Although not all types of steroids cause hair loss, many do. Some steroids may hasten the process of hair loss especially if a person is genetically prone to have male pattern baldness. An example are anabolic steroids used in bodybuilding. Continued or prolonged use of these steroids may accelerate the hair loss process due to potent chemicals and hormones that they contain.

Celebrating Alopecia Areata Awareness Month

September marks the month-long commemoration of alopecia areata awareness worldwide. Leading this year’s celebration in the country is Alopecia Philippines, a group founded by singer and songwriter Abby Asistio in 2012.

Abby is no stranger to alopecia, having been diagnosed with alopecia areata since she was four years old. Alopecia areata is described as an auto-immune disorder that results in partial or total loss of hair on the head and other parts of the body. Abby’s decision to come out in public with her condition was a major turning point in her life. “It was a very big step for me. And I was amazed at the response I got from both my friends and random people who said my story had touched and inspired them,” Abby reveals after talking about her condition on national TV back in 2008.

Fast forward to September 2012, Abby decided to start an online campaign in time with Alopecia Awareness Month by inviting family and friends to pose with the double “A” (inverted “V”) sign using their fingers on the photo sharing site, Instagram. It quickly caught on and Abby was overwhelmed by the response from netizens, with over a thousand photo contributions to date.

This paved the way for the beginnings of Alopecia Philippines. It aims to raise awareness about alopecia and correct common misconceptions and perceptions about it, provide encouragement to people afflicted with it, and create an online support community for them. Inspired by Abby’s transparency and courage, men and women, kids and teens from different walks of life began sharing their own stories and struggles living with alopecia. What started out as a group of ten is now more than 100 members strong and its Facebook page – Alopecia Areata Awareness, draws followers from all over the world.

The group regularly organizes information drives about alopecia through different platforms– benefit concerts, symposia, and multimedia testimonials, among others. It has earned raves and waves of admiration in and out of social media for their confidence and pride in embracing their life with alopecia.

FROM BALD TO BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL:Abby Asistio’s Recovery from Alopecia

Singer-songwriter, TV host, Novuhair brand ambassador, and the poster girl for alopecia in the country, Abby Asistio is singing a happy tune nowadays. And it’s all because of those precious new strands of hair which are obviously growing on her previously bald head.

Abby proudly shows off her head with its short hair, like a child showing off a prized toy. “It has consistently been growing longer these past two years. My hair is significantly thicker now and I could already style it in different ways, even without having to wear wigs, turbans, and other hair accessories,” she shares with an obvious gleam of joy in her eyes.

It seems like a miracle, those delicate black strands of hair growing from her scalp and for Abby, the sensations are almost all new to her. “I never thought I could have a full head of hair again. I could actually “take care of my hair” now and even go to the salon to get a trim,” she says enthusiastically. “I love having hair again,” she further states.

Abby’s secret? Novuhair, nature’s answer to hair loss, which she has been using for more than 2 years now. “I use the scalp lotion, shampoo, and conditioner religiously,” Abby continues.

Having alopecia is a huge part of Abby’s life journey and after successfully recovering from it since being diagnosed at the age of four, she has made it her mission to help others afflicted with the same condition. She started by putting up the first support group in the country – Alopecia Philippines, which aims to spread awareness about the condition and at the same time, inspire and motivate those with alopecia to become more secure and comfortable in their own skin.

“It’s never easy,” Abby says about living with alopecia. “But remember, you are not alone. People around you love and care for you, and accept and appreciate you for who you are. Look for someone to talk to, a shoulder to cry on, people to laugh about your journey and hair stories with,” Abby further shares.

“Everything happens for a reason. In the end, we can choose to rise above the disease and come out better, stronger, more courageous, and more beautiful. Our hair may come and go but it is who we are, what is inside that truly matters and lasts,” Abby says with a smile, the beautiful woman who has bravely battled alopecia and came out of it gloriously victorious with the aid of Novuhair. Abby thanks Novuhair, “I now have a full head of hair and feel more confident than ever before.”

MYTH OR FACT: Pregnancy makes hair fuller and thicker

FACT. Hair looks noticeably fuller and thicker during pregnancy because of the presence of higher levels of estrogen in the body. It does not mean new hair strands are growing rather, less hair are being shed than normal. In a normal hair growth cycle, 90% of the hair follicles are in the anagen or active phase while around 10% percent are in the telogen or resting phase. During pregnancy, increased estrogen levels prolong the growing stage of the hair follicles and prevent those in the resting stage from falling off naturally. Thus, hair appears thicker and fuller.

Dandruff is a common scalp condition characterized by the appearance of flaky skin and itchiness of the scalp. Other symptoms may include irritation and redness of the scalp. Although not a serious problem, having dandruff could potentially be a very embarrassing one.

Causes of Dandruff
Unlike what many think, dandruff is not a result of poor hygiene. Although there are no definite known causes of dandruff, a yeast-like fungus that is present in everyone’s scalp, malasezzia, is believed to be a major contributing factor when it grows out of control. As a result, it feeds on the oil secreted by the scalp, irritating it and producing more skin cells. These extra skin cells take on a white and flaky appearance, die and fall off.

Not shampooing properly and often enough is also a probable cause of dandruff. If excessive shampooing strips the hair of its natural oils, not enough shampooing, on the other hand, causes the buildup of more oil and dead skin cells on the scalp, giving the yeast and fungi a feeding frenzy.

Extreme and excessive flaking on the scalp may also be a result of other underlying fungal and inflammatory skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or seborrheic dermatitis.

Dandruff may also be a reaction to certain ingredients found in hair care products like shampoos, dyes, and styling gels or wax. These sensitivities could result in an itchy and scaly scalp.

Treatment Options
Although having dandruff does not pose a risk to your health, some people who have a severe case of dandruff may experience some social or confidence issues that’s why it’s always better to treat it right away.

For most cases, medicated and specially-formulated shampoos, which are conveniently and easily available in groceries and drug stores, usually address the problem. Check the label if it contains zinc, which is used to fight against dandruff.

Other shampoos, like Novuhair, nature’s answer to hair loss, also has anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial properties, which are helpful in managing and treating dandruff. Novuhair is made from the best herbal and natural ingredients combined together to promote healthier, thicker, more manageable, and stronger hair. It contains essential oils of peppermint, lavender, rosemary, and lemongrass, moringa, aloe vera, and virgin coconut oil, which are all proven to alleviate scalp itching, redness, and irritation, and reduce the appearance of dandruff.

Regular use of an anti-dandruff shampoo should solve the problem for mild cases. But in severe conditions, it is best to see a dermatologist to address the root cause of the problem and get appropriate treatment.
