Lead author Aladdin Shadyab, who hails from the University of California, San Diego’s School of Medicine. said that the result of their study showed cells age faster with a sedentary lifestyle. Hence, chronological age doesn’t always match biological age, he concluded.

Aged 64 to 95 years old, the participants answered questionnaires. Also, they wore a tracking device to trace their activity levels for one week. The research, though, did not demonstrate a cause-and-effect relationship between accelerated aging and lack of exercise. But still “discussions about the benefits of exercise should start when we are young, and physical activity should continue to be part of our daily lives as we get older, even at 80 years old,” Shadyab said in a university news release.

In particular, the researchers discovered that those participants who sat for over 10 hours daily and got less than 40 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity a day had shorter telomeres. These caps situated on the end of DNA strands shield chromosomes from deterioration.

Naturally, telomeres become short as a person ages. Health and lifestyle factors such as smoking and obesity, however, can fast track the process.

The researchers said in background notes that shortened telomeres are attributed to heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Shadyab bared that they learned that women who remained seated for more hours did not have shorter telomere length when they exercised for at least 30 minutes a day. This is the national recommended guideline, he noted.

With the encouraging results of their research, his group is keen on conducting studies in the future to examine the relation of exercise and telomere length in younger adults and in men. Their initiative seeks to further prove how sitting affects the process of aging.
